Abstract

8335. Clark, W. R., and Holland, C. G. April 2. Turning-gear.-In starting-mechanism wherein tbe starting-shaft 29 is moved axially on reverse rotation of the engine shaft 7 to disengage the clutch between the two shafts, the axial movement is effected by pawls 32 pivoted on the starting- shaft and, during the normal starting movement, trailing over ratchet teeth on a fixed plate. The pawls are held up to the teeth by springs 35, which also bear on the teeth. On a reverse rotation, the pawls are held by the ratchet teeth and cause axial movement of the shaft. When the starting-shaft is at rest with the clutch disengaged, the pawls and their springs do not bear on the ratchet teeth. The starting-shaft may be moved axially into engagement, either by an ordinary starting-handle 38, or by a cam 56 on a ring 52 which coacts with a pulley 60 on the starting-shaft. The pulley is rotated by a cable from any suitable place, and the cam causes its axial movement along with the starting-shaft. Continued rotation of the pulley turns the engine. The clutch member on the engine shaft has the clutch recesses shaped so as to assist quick disengagement.
