Abstract

2028. Haughtaling, P. A. July 27, A.D. 1901, [date applied for under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Braces.-Relates to a ratchet clutch, shown and described in connection with a lawn-mower, but applicable also for ratchet braces. Pawls f<4> pivoted in the arms of a loose ring f<2> are provided with guide-pins f<5>, which engage in eccentric slots e<3> in a pinion e<2>, and are formed with claws to engage an internal ratchet-wheel F secured to the cutter spindle E. The pinion is in gear with an internal ring of teeth on the carrying-wheel B and, when rotated in one direction, it forces the claw ends of the pawls outwards into engagement with the ratchet-wheel and thus carries the wheel around with it. If the motion of the pinion is retarded relatively to the cutter spindle, the pawls are drawn inwards and disengaged. As shown in Fig. 5, the :claw may be replaced by a friction surface.
