Cluches, friction and claw; variable-speed gearing.-Relates to clutch mechanism of the type used with the variable-speed gearing of motorvehicles to disconnect the speed gearing from the driven part of the main clutch in order to facilitate changing gear. The driven part B of the main friction clutch is provided with an extension F which carries a friction cone G engaging a similar spring-pressed cone G<1> sliding on a feather h<1> on a sleeve H secured to the gear shaft J. The part F also carries springs L<1> engaging lugs l on a ring L in which are pivoted pawls P kept by springs l<4> in engagement with teeth k on a sleeve K secured to the sleeve H. When changing gear, the cone B is disengaged from the main driving-cone A, and at the same time the pawls l<3> are disengaged from the teeth k. The gear is then changed, giving a new speed to the shaft J, which speed is gradually conveyed by the coupling G, G<1> to the cone B. When the cone clutch A, B is again engaged the pawls l<3> engage the teeth k without shock, engagement being made by the springs l<4> if the teeth do not register immediately. The springs L<1> prevent shock if the clutches are re-engaged before the coupling G, G<1> has had time to complete its work.
