Variable - speed toothed gearing; clutches, claw. - A gear 34 secured to a driving-shaft 14 has an extension 37 projecting over a shaft 16, which is to be driven at different speeds A countershaft 49 driven constantly from the gear 34 carries gears 54, 55, which are in constant mesh with gear - rings 40, 41. A third gear-ring 42 is connected through idlers 65 to the gear 55 so as to be driven reversely. The rings 40, 41, 42 surround the shaft 16 without touching it, and are in line with the gear extension 37. A sleeve 28 slides on feathers on the shaft 16 and carries in a ring of pockets in its end a set of clutch balls 32. The balls 32 are adapted to engage alternatively sets of lugs 46 on the inside surfaces of the extension 37, and of the gears 40, 41, 42, so that the shaft 16 is driven directly, at two reduced speeds, and reversely, respectively. The shaft 16 may be hollow enclosing an extension 15 of the shaft 14.
