Variable-speed gearing; clutches.-In variablespeed and reversing gearing applicable to motorvehicles &c., the driven shaft 6 by means of collars 13 and ball bearings 12 carries a sleeve 7. A cone 4 on the shaft 6 engages a cone 3 on the driving- shaft 1 for high speed, the cone 5 on the sleeve 7 being engaged for low speed or reverse. A pinion 21 on the sleeve 7 gears with a pinion 20 on a countershaft 17 and also with a pinion, on the same shaft as the pinion 31, which gears with a pinion 22 on the shaft 17. A sliding clutch 23 on a squared part of the shaft 17 engages the pinion 20 for low speed or the pinion 22 for reverse. Motion is conveyed to the shaft 6 by wheels 18, 19.
