[Cognate Application, 22,450/14.] Variable-speed toothed gearing for motorvehicles of the kind in which the speed changes are effected by moving a clutch sleeve such as F, Fig. 1, comprises a finally-driven element B loosely mounted on a driving-shaft A. Fast on the shaft A are a clutch collar A' and a toothed pinion C. Loose on the shaft A is a sleeve D<1> carrying a gear D and a clutch member D<2>. Loose on the sleeve D<1> is a gear E carrying a clutch member E<2>. The gears C, D are connected through connected gears G, G<1> loose on a countershaft H. The gears E, B are connected through other loose gears J, J<1>. The sleeve F has internal rings of clutch dogs F<1>, F<2>, and in the form shown these engage a long clutch member B<2> on the gear B and also the clutch collar A<1>. This yields a direct, fourth, or highest-speed drive. The next or third speed is brought into action by sliding the sleeve F until the teeth F<2> engage the teeth D<2>, the teeth F' remaining in mesh with the teeth B<2>. Power passes through the gears C, G, G', D, and sleeves D<1>, F. The second speed is brought into action by sliding the sleeve F until the teeth F<2> engage the teeth E<2>, and the teeth F' engage the collar A' only. Power passes through the sleeve F, and the gears E, J, J' to the gear B. For the first or lowest speed, the sleeve F connects the clutch teeth D<2>, E<2>. Power then passes through the gears C, G, G', D, the sleeves D', F, and the gears E, J, J' to the gear B. In a modified arrangement yielding three speeds shown in Fig. 5, there is no pinion secured to the shaft A, and gears G', J, J' are all secured to the shaft H. The sleeve F connects the collar A<1> directly to the gear B, or connects the collar A' either to a gear D or to a gear E. In this case, clutch teeth F' may be formed on the end or face of the sleeve F.
