Abstract

159,521. Clark, A. H. Nov. 28, 1919. Turning-gear. - In momentum powerstoring apparatus for starting engines, a fly-wheel is set in rotation by hand or foot or an auxiliary motor and is automatically connected to the engine shaft when the supply of power ceases. The fly-wheel is readily disconnected when it is next required to accumulate power for starting. In the form shown, the flywheel 0 is loose on the engine crankshaft J and can be rotated from a handle A through bevel-gear B, a flexible shaft C and sprocket gearing D, E; the sprocket. wheel E turns by means of pawls G a ratchet - wheel F., which is loose on the shaft J and turns me flywheel by means of clutch teeth M, Fig. 3. When the movement of the handle A is stopped, the inclined faces of the clutch teeth M move the flywheel automatically into engagement with a friction clutch R fixed on the crank-shaft and the sleeve F into engagement with a collar L, so that the fly-wheel imparts its rotation to the engine &c. The clutches are automatically disengaged by the actuation of the handle A when the apparatus is again to be used.
