Abstract
468,021. Lockable free-wheel clutches; facilitating change of speed. NEURATH, W. Sept. 9, 1936, No. 24598. Convention date, Oct. 8, 1935. [Class 80 (ii)] In a roller free-wheel tail clutch for the gear-box of a motor vehicle, the inner clutch member 4, Fig. 1, is secured to a sleeve 5 which is splined on the driving shaft 18 and which has teeth 10' adapted to engage teeth 10 in the outer driven clutch member 3 so as to lock the clutch. A sleeve 6 rotating with the sleeve 5 is permitted a limited axial play thereon. A member 7, positioned axially on the sleeve 6 but rotatable thereon, has teeth 8, Fig. 3, the stepped parts 9 of which engage constantly in teeth 10<2> of the member 3. A pivoted fork 11 engaging a groove in the sleeve 6 is urged to the right by a spring 13 and is connected by a rod 21 and spring 20 to the operating pedal 17 of the main clutch. Thus, on depression of the pedal 17, the free-wheel clutch is unlocked and over-runs so as to facilitate gear changing, and the teeth 8 move to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3. On release of the pedal, the members 4.. 7 are thus prevented from returning to the right. When the clutch begins to drive, the teeth 8 move into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, and the members 6, 7 can move to the right to the extent of their axial play on the sleeve 5, which latter is prevented from moving due to friction, since the clutch is in driving condition. On now allowing the clutch to overrun, the sleeve 5 can move to engage the locking teeth. A free-wheel clutch may be arranged between the members 6 and 7. For reverse drive, the sleeve 5 is moved to the left by a separate lever so as to bring its teeth 10<1> into engagement with the teeth 10<2>. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the inner clutch member 4 itself carries the teeth 10<1> and is splined, with slight angular play, on the shaft 18. A member 14, connected for rotation with the member 4 but capable of axial play relative thereto limited by heads on rod 27, carries teeth 8<1> co-operating with teeth 32 on a flange 14<1> on the shaft 18. A sleeve 25 frictionally arranged on the member 14 rotates constantly with the member 3. With the clutch unlocked and in overrunning condition, the teeth 8<1> and 32 cannot engage. As the clutch begins to drive, the teeth 8<1>, 32 move into alignment and engage to the extent of the axial play provided by the rod 27. On now allowing the clutch to overrun, the member 4 moves to the left to lock the clutch. Instead of axial play being provided between the members. 4 and 14, the flange 14<1> may have limited axial play on the shaft 18.
