Abstract

25,700. McKardy, H. H. May 17, 1912. Spring power-storing mechanism.-In a spring turning-gear the spring is fixed at its outer end and connected at its inner end to a sleeve 4, Fig. 2, loose on the shaft 8, which is connected to the engine crank-shaft. The spring may be wound up by hand through the shaft 21, pinion 23, and spur-wheel 5 fast on the sleeve 4, a spring-pressed ratchet 24, acting through the wheels 19, 20 preventing unwinding. To start the engine a yoke 31 fast on a shaft 27 is swung over to disengage the clutch 18 from the ratchetwheel 14. The yoke 31 carries springs 36, Fig. 3, which are compressed by this movement, and which cause the throwing-over of a second yoke 32 free on the shaft 27 and engaging a clutch sleeve 11 on a square part of the shaft 8; this movement of the clutch sleeve connects the sleeve 4 with the shaft 8 and allows the spring to turn the engine. To rewind the spring, the shaft 27 is swung in the reverse direction, which puts the clutch 18 into engagement with the ratchetwheel 14 and the clutch sleeve 11 with a second sleeve 9 free on the shaft 8 and carrying a spurwheel 12. The spring is then wound up through the wheels 18, 19 on the shaft 17, the wheel 20, the pinion 23, and wheel 5. To prevent overwinding the spherical end 38 of a bell-crank lever engages in a spiral groove 37, in the spurwheel 5 and disengages the clutch sleeve 11 from the sleeve 9. The shaft 8 may be turned directly by a handle engaging teeth 41 on the end of the sleeve 9.
