In a starter for a single cylinder petrol engine, such as that used in lawn mowers and outboard motors, and comprising a housing 18 fitted with a cover 23 and mounted on the engine housing 11 and enclosing a spiral spring 56 and a shaft 27 which is operated by a handle 29 for winding the spring 56 and is connectable to the crank-shaft 12 of the engine for starting the latter upon release of the energy of the spring 56, a lost motion stop or coil spring 42 permits only one direction of rotation of the shaft 27 and only slight lost motion rotation in an opposite direction, members 46, 38 being provided for releasing the stop 42 to release the energy of the spring 56 and disconnect the handle 29 from the shaft 27, and a pawl 67 and a ratchet 14 being drivingly connected between the shaft 27 and the crankshaft 12 for movement into engagement upon said slight rotation of the shaft 27 and for automatic movement out of contact under the action of a spring 74 on the pawl 67 when the engine is running. As shown, the handle 29 drives the shaft 27 through a member 36 coiled around a collar 34 non-rotatably secured to a sleeve 28 secured to the shaft 27 and on the lower end of which the spring 42 is wound opposite to the member 36 to permit only counter-clockwise rotation of the sleeve 28. The member 46 attached to the cover 23 has an inclined surface 47 thereon which engages the similarly inclined lower surface of a member 48 which is rotatably disposed over the sleeve 28. Rotation of the member 48 by a control rod 51 causes the former to move up the incline 47 whereby the collar 34 and the sleeve 28 are raised to disconnect the shaft 27 from the handle 29.
