Turning-gear. - ln a. spring starter for internalcombustion engines comprising a coiled spring 1 connected at its -ends to a rotary barrel 2, 3 and a hub 8, means for rotating the hub to wind up the spring, a band brake 13 for holding the barrel 3, and a clutch member 23 driven from the barrel through gearing 19, 20, 20<1>, 21 when the brake 13 is released, a single lever 18 effects the engagement of the clutch and the release of the brake. The clutch member 23 slides in an extension 22 of the gear 21 and is moved into engagement with a clutch member 24 on the engine shaft by means of the lever 18 acting through a rod 32, arms 31, 28 on a spindle 29, a rod 25 and a spring 27. The lever 18 also turns the spindle of an eccentric 17 carrying one end of the brake 13, the other end being secured to the fixed outer casing 9. At starting, the lever 18 is operated to bring the clutch 23, 24 into engagement, and then released; the spring 1 is wound by turning the hub 8 by means of a handle and worm gearing 10, 11, and the brake 13 is then released by a second actuation of the lever 18. The spring 1 is bent over at its ends 1<1>, 1<11>, to engage a slot in the barrel 2, Fig. 3, and ratchet teeth 7 on the hub 8.
