276,232. Fitzpatrick, H. D., (Import Maatschappij). Feb. 2, 1927. Turning-gear.-A starting-handle 2 for internal-combustion engines is disengaged from the engine shaft 16, if the engine turns backwards at starting, by means of a, loose sleeve 6 having ratchet teeth 5 engaged by a pawl 3 on the handle 2. The sleeve has cam projections 7 engaging corresponding notches 10 in a fixed sleeve 11 surrounding the shaft 1 of the starting-handle, and the shaft 1 engages the engine shaft 16 by means of clutch dogs 14, 15. The sleeve 11 is secured to a fixed member by a nut 11<a>. When starting, the pawl 3 slips over the ratchet 5; if the engine shaft turns backwards, the sleeve 6 is turned by the pawl and ratchet and is moved axially, to disengage the starting- handle, by the inclined faces of the projections 7 and notches 10. Fig. 2 shows a modification of the shape of the projections 7 and notches 10, the edges of which are rounded; the sleeve 11 in this form is bolted to a fixed member.
