Abstract

227,045. Wilkes, J. J. June 16, 1924. Turning-gear.-In order to prevent damage in the event of backward starting of the engine, the starting-handle comprises two parts a, b connected by a T-piece c fixed to the part a and secured to the part b by the screw-threaded spindle n of a toothed quadrant e adapted to engage a free-wheel g mounted on the chassis. When starting the engine, the quadrant e rotates the wheel g, but if the engine shaft and the member d turn backwards, the wheel g is locked and the quadrant e unscrews the spindle n, thus releasing the connection between the parts a, d. The spindle n has a left-hand thread, and complete separation of the parts a, d is prevented by a screw stu'd f entering a recess in the member d.
