Turning-gear. - In motor-cars in which the lighting-dynamo is used for starting the engine through reduction gearing, planet pinions 11 between the shafts of the dynamo and the engine are movable axially into or out of mesh with a fixed toothed ring 15 by means of a screwed connection between ,the carrier 6 for the planet pinions and a member 2 connected to the engine. As shown, the pinions 11 are rotatable on spindles 14 on the carrier 6, and pinions 12 mounted on the pinions 11 engage teeth 30 on the dynamo shaft 1. Ratchet teeth 34 on the side of the pinions 12 are engaged by spring-pressed sliding pawls 17 on the carrier 6, which has a collar 7 sliding over a disc 32 on the member 2. When the engine is running, rotation being in the direction of the arrow 36, the .part 6 is screwed to the right in Fig. 1, releasing the pinions 11 from the ring 15; the pins 17 bear against the disc 32 and lock the pinions 12, so that the gearing rotates as a whole and the dynamo shaft 1 is driven at engine speed. At starting, the dynamo, acting as a motor, rotates in the same direction, the member 6 is moved axially to the left by the action of the screwed member 2 and the sloping faces of the ratchet teeth 34. the pinions 11 engage the ring 15, and the engine is driven at reduced speed. For starting by means of a hand crank engaging the other end of the dynamo shaft, a pin 23 in the shaft 1 can engage claws in a ring 24 secured by keys 35 to the member 2, a spring 25 normally keeping the members 23, 24 apart.
