Abstract
130,984. Delano, J. K. Aug. 3, 1918, [Convention date]. Turning-gear.-In a starting-device for aeroplane or other engines comprising reduction gear which can be actuated electrically or by hand at different rates of reduction, a starter shaft 15, in line with a shaft 13 secured to the engine shaft S, can be actuated by a crank-handle and carries a gear wheel 18 meshing with a pinion 19 driven by an electric motor M. The starter shaft 15 is connected to the shaft 13 by reduction gear comprising an internally-toothed member 132 on the shaft 13, with which engages an externally toothed gear 27 having fewer teeth and mounted on ball bearings on an eccentric 29 keyed to the shaft 15. The reduction gear 27, 132 transmits motion in one direction only and is controlled by a device comprising a ratchet gear 21 mounted in ball bearings 211 on the shaft 15 and in roller bearings 22 on a flange on the gear 27. The ratchet is engaged during starting by one of a pair of pawls 301, 302 of different length, which are withdrawn when the current to the starting-motor is cut off by a switch 33, 35. Between the faces of the gears 21, 27 is a plate 25 with radial slots engaged by headed pins 26 carried by the gear 27 and similar pins carried by the gear 21, so that when the ratchet gear 21 is held by the pawls, the gear 27 is held against rotation and effects slow rotation of the gear 132 connected to the crank-shaft. Auxiliary apparatus such as a generator, speedometer, or machine-gun synchronizer may be driven by the bevel gear 14 secured to the shafts 13, S and by external teeth 133 on the gear 132. The starter shaft 15 may be driven by hand from an inclined shaft through bevel gears, one of which can be mounted on a key 152; the inclined shaft is in that case supported in an opening in the gear case. The electric motor M is supported by its end in a recess 20 on the endplate 16 of a casing for the turning-gear and is retained by a set-screw 201. The gear casing is mounted on the end of the engine crank-case. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states also that an auxiliary magneto for ignition at starting may be driven by a pinion in mesh with the gear 18 and with a pinion on the magneto shaft. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
