Abstract
342,472. Turning-gear. BLACKSTONE, G. M., CARTER, F., and CARTER, E., Rutland Engineering Works, Stamford, Lincolnshire. Dec. 23, 1929, No. 39228. [Class 7 (v).] In an engine starter comprising an auxiliary petrol engine, the shaft c<1> of which carries a driving pinion d engaging a spur wheel e<1> on an intermediate shaft e carrying a pinion e<2> movable axially into gear with a spur wheel on the main engine shaft, the pinion d is driven from the shaft c<1> through an adjustable frictional coupling. As shown, the shaft e carrying the pinion e<2> is slidable by means of a forked lever f to bring the pinion into engagement with teeth on the fly-wheel b. A friction disc d<1> on the pinion d is held in engagement with a disc d<2>, fixed on the shaft c<1>, by a spring g adjusted by means of a nut g<1> engaging a thread c<2> on the shaft c<1>. The auxiliary engine may be started by means of a starting handle applied to the shaft of the main engine or to the intermediate shaft e. The Provisional Specification states also that the lever f may actuate mechanism by which the throttle of the auxiliary engine is closed when the auxiliary engine is out of gear.
