Abstract

192,860. Chandler, E. R. Dec. 6, 1921. Variable-speed gearing for motor vehicles comprises a driving toothed or friction disc 10 adapted to be moved into and out of engagement with an axially-movable toothed wheel or roller 11 combined with a friction clutch 4, which is disengaged before the disc. The disc 10 is normally held in gear position by a spring 6, which abuts against a collar 7 fast on the disc shaft 3<1>. The female member 19 of the clutch is secured to the end of the shaft 3'. The male member 20 is slidably splined on the end of the engine shaft 3. A clutch pedal lever 9 is connected by a link 12 to a lever 8 which acts on the collar 7 against the spring 6. There is a lost motion connection at 21, Fig. 2, which allows the clutch to be moved before the disc.
