Facilitating changing speed. -Lubricant drawn from a sump 2a in the change-speed gear box 1 of a motor-vehicle through a pipe 3 is forced by a pump 4 driven by the lay shaft 5 into an axial conduit 5a therein, whence it passes to the teeth of the wheels 9 on the shaft 5 through radial pas. sages 7. A needle valve 13 extending through the bore 5<a> is normally pressed outwards by a spring 14, but, when the clutch is disengaged, the valve is forced inwards by a lever 15, 16 to throttle the pump delivery, whereby a braking effect is exerted on the lay shaft to facilitate gear changing.
