Abstract

361,281. Power transmission for motor vehicles. SALERNI, P. M., 23, Carlton House Terrace, London. May 15, 1930, No. 15024. [Class 79 (ii).] The power transmission of a vehicle comprises an hydraulic transmitter B, Fig. 1, between the engine A and the changespeed gear C of " positive " type. This is the type in which power is transmitted through solid material under shear, bend, or compression loads without possibility of slip, and adapted for easy changing without disconnecting the hydraulic drive by the provision of interrupting- means in the transmission. Gears of this type are described in Specifications 347,093 and 347,165,' [both in Group XXIVWith this type of gearing, when the drive has been interrupted in speed changing, it remains interrupted until due to acceleration or deceleration of the engine end relatively to the road wheels end of the transmission, automatic reconnection is effected when synchronism has been attained. The interrupter may be at any suitable point. The change-speed gear C may be controlled by hydraulic means as described in Specification 351,505, [Group XXIV]. The hydraulic transmitter is of the type comprising a driving vane wheel B<1> and a turbine or driven vane wheel B<3>. These wheels are secured to the engine shaft A<1> and to the driving-shaft B<4> of the change gearing respectively. For changing during racing, the shaft B<4> may be fitted with a drum E adapted to be engaged by a brake El applied by a pedal E<2> to reduce the speed of that shaft. The transmitter B may be controlled by moving axially a ring valve F, Fig. 2. This may be done manually, or automatically by centrifugal weights F<2> acting against a central spring F3. Specifications 353,108 and 353,334 also are referred to.
