Abstract

353,108. Variable-speed gearing. MARTIN, P. and DAIMLER CO., Ltd., Daimler Works, Coventry. May 2, 1930, No. 13558. [Class 80 (ii).] lower transmission mechanism for motor vehicles comprises an hydraulic coupling B of the fluid flywheel type having its primary member 1, 4 directly coupled to the engine shaft 3, and an epicyclic change-speed gear A, of a type controlled by braking members, which is directly connected to the secondary member of the hydraulic coupling, so that the slip of the coupling is interposed in the transmission under all conditions of starting and running, with out the interposition of an independent foot-operated clutch between the engine and the said gear. The epicyclic gear may be constructed as described in Specification 164,042, [Class 80 (ii), Gearing, Variable-speed &c.], and 328,660, [Class 103 (i), Brakes &c.], any desired gear being preselected by a hand-lever (not shown), the selected gear being engaged when a pedal G is depressed. The secondary member of the hydraulic coupling comprises a boss 6 and blades 7 and its shaft 8 is connected to the epicyclic gear by a shaft C and universal joints D, D<1>. The blades 5 of the primary member are carried by the right-hand half 4 of the casing 1 of the coupling. Specification 353,334 also is referred to.
