Abstract

365,998. Facilitating changing speed ; facilitating disengaging dog clutches. SINCLAIR, H., 6, The Crest, Surbiton, Surrey. Sept. 25, 1930, No. 28683. [Class 80 (ii).] In order to relieve of all torque in a sliding- gear change-speed gear or dog clutch driven by an hydraulic coupling, the intervening shaft is turned slightly backwards by depressing a pedal. The lay-out on a vehicle is shown in Fig. 1, where 1 is the engine, 3 the hydraulic clutch, 5 the gear-box, and 6 an isolating clutch, a two-way clutch which is rendered one-way by depressing a pedal 7. A drum 4 fast on an intervening shaft 9 is stopped and turned backwards on depressing the pedal 7, which is also connected so as to throttle down the engine 1. A boss 12, Fig. 2, projecting from the drum 4 turns inside a sleeve 21 projecting from a cover-plate 20 of the casing of the gearing 11 &c. Free upon sleeve 21 is a plate 23 with a lug 29, Fig. 3, held by a spring-pulled bolt 27 down on a lug 25 of the fixed casing. A brake band 38 encircling drum 4 is pivoted at one end to a pin 40 carried by the plate 23 and is pivoted at the other end to a pin 41 carried by a lever 42 in turn pivoted to the pin 40.. The lever 42 is connected through a linkage 43, 44, 46 to the pedal 7, Fig. 1. The drum 4 normally turns to the right of Fig. 3. When lever 7 is depressed, lever 42 is raised so as to tighten band 38 on drum 4. When drum 4 has been stopped, continued depression of the pedal 7 causes lever 42 to rise bodily, carrying with it the plate 23. This backward angular motion continues until a lug 31 upon plate 23 strikes a fixed stop 30. Toothed gear or clutch 11, Fig. 2, has thus been turned backwards, and the gear change can be freely made. On release of the pedal, the bolt 27 returns plate 23 to the right against stop 25, and the brake is released. A modified arrangement is described comprising a brake of the expanding- segment type.
