Abstract

393,296. Variable speed gearing. SWAN, J. G., 14, Old Square, Lincoln's Inn, London. Nov. 30, 1931, No. 13674/33. Divided on 393,294. [Class 80 (ii).] A coupling device or unit comprising a planetary gear train such as 151, 163, 162, Fig. 3, and an hydraulic coupling 155, 160 in a rotary casing 152 and in which an input gear 151 is always rotatable as one with an input shaft 150 and with said casing and another output gear, such a planet-carrier 164, is rotatable with an output shaft 161, and the hydraulic coupling serves to connect the input gear 151 with a third or loose gear annulus 162 wherein the connection between said input and loose gears 151, 162 includes, in addition to the hydraulic coupling 155,160, a friction clutch 154, 157, which enables said connection to. be interrupted at will. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the clutch 154, 157 connects the rotary driving casing 152 through a splined loose sleeve 156 to the primary hydraulic element 155. By a control lever 169, the clutch member 157 may be slid against a spring 158 to the right so as to interrupt the clutch connection and make frictional connection with a fixed brake cone 159. The element 155 is thus held and exerts a braking action on the element 160 which is rotated backwards by the reaction of the load shaft 161, so producing increased torque with full shock-absorbing capacity. A toothed starter ring is shown at 153 for use on motor-vehicles, and a free-wheel 165 enables the engine to be used as a brake. The annulus 162 is secured to the element 160 by through bolts 170 and the gearing turns in a casing between the back of the element 160 and a plate 173, which gear casing communicates with an inner toric space 171 by ducts 31, 32 allowing circulation of oil. The annulus 162 and element 160 may be connected by a further sleeve 167 to a brake drum 168, and the control 169 may be interconnected with means for arresting the drum 168 and with means for arresting a drum 166 on the output shaft 161. In a modified arrangement, described in the abridgment of Specification 393,294 with reference to Fig. 1 thereof, the friction clutch serves to connect the secondary hydraulic element with the loose gear of the planetary train. In an arrangement described with reference to Fig. 2, (not shown) the friction clutch connects corresponding parts where a gear train with stepped planet gears is employed. Specification 393,295 also is referred to.
