Abstract
684,694. Change-speed gearing. HUNSLET ENGINE CO., Ltd., and ALCOCK, J. F. Jan. 15, 1951 [Feb. 17, 1950], No. 4095/50. Class 80 (ii). In change-speed gearing, the input shaft c of which is driven from an internal-combustion engine through a clutch, hydraulic coupling, torque converter or other means disengageable through linkwork j, i, h by depression of a pedal k, one end of a bell-crank lever a acts to brake a disc b fast on the shaft c and the other end pivotally carries a spring-loaded bar d coacting with the lever j, with a lever m operated by the throttle lever n and with a cam p operated by the gear. lever o. When an upward gear change is to be made, pedal k is depressed to position 1, to disengage the clutch, and lever o is moved to neutral, as shown. The pedal is then released, moving to position 2 and thereby exerting endwise pressure on the bar d to cause the lever a to brake the disc b. The pedal is again depressed to position 1, releasing the brake, and lever o is moved to the higher gear position, thereby, through cam p, tilting the bar d so that when pedal k is again released it can return to its normal position. During a down change, the throttle lever n is moved to increase the engine speed, thereby tilting the bar d to keep it clear of the lever j so that the brake is not applied during such down change.
