Abstract

1367852 Expanding wheel gear C G HARD A F SEGERSTAD 15 Feb 1972 [22 Feb 1971] 6919/72 Heading F2D A centrifugally-closed expanding pulley 2, 3 on an engine-driven shaft 1 and driving a load such as a motor-vehicle through abelt and spring- loaded output pulley, is provided with a device to delay downshift movement towards open position, said delay device comprising a one-way clutch 39, subject to a braking action so that it brakes opening (downshift) movement but does not affect closing (upshift) movement of the pulley flange. The braking effect may be cancelled by kickdown and also full release of the usual accelerator pedal, by the brake pedal or by a separate control. A ratio hold control may also be provided. A splined pulley-flange 3 is moved axially towards an axially-fixed flange 2 by the outward movement of a pair of masses 14, each pivoted at the junction of two links 9, 10, one, 9, pivoted on a. plate 5 fast to the pulley shaft 1, the other, 10, pivoted to a toothed rack 13 radially slidable thereon, its outward movement turning a toothed segment 18, carrying a roller 19 which thrusts on a surface 20 of the flange 3 to shift the latter towards the flange 2. The return downshift opening movement is braked by the one-way spring clutches 39, each secured to one of the segments 18, and surrounded by a brake band 26 tensioned by a spring 28. The downshift braking is cancelled by axially thrusting, through a bearing (40), Fig. 6 (not shown), axial pins (35), which pass through the plate 5 and have chamfered ends which cam outwardly the springs 28, thus releasing the brake band tension to permit unrestricted downshift. The brake-release thrust bearing (40) is operated through a guided cable (42), Fig. 7 (not shown), either directly by kickdown of the accelerator (43); through a lever (48) by a separate control (46); or Fig. 8 (not shown), also by accelerator release. For ratio-hold, a control, not described, thrusts stop pins through the plate 5 to hold the racks 13.
