Abstract
676,634. Variable-speed gear. BOITE AUTOMATIQUE PLANETAIRE B.A.P. May 30,1949 [June 1, 1948], No. 14519/49. Class 80 (ii). [Also in Group XXXIV] A planetary two-speed gear for a vehicle, crane or machine-tool, controlled automatically by vehicle-speed, engine fuel-supply position and a supervisory manual control, giving transitional up and down shift without power interruption, comprises a direct-drive friction disc clutch 9, between an input sun-wheel shaft 7 and a freely mounted reaction planet-carrier 10; and a reduced-drive band-brake 19 which is at all times effective to prevent backward rotation of the planet-carrier (so that shifts occur without power interruption), but is, on completion of a downshift, tightened thereon to prevent rotation in both directions to provide a bidirectional reduced drive. Hydraulic pressure from a single input-driven pump 17 actuates the clutch 9 through an annular piston 8, and the brake 19 through a piston 28, under control of a rotary selector-valve 16 on a spindle 38 actuated, through a toothed segment 39 and pushrod 36, conjointly by a centrifugal governor 32 driven by an output sun-wheel shaft 13; by a control for the engine fuel-supply (providing torque-response), which acts through a link 35a, bellcrank and sleeve 29 to vary the loading of the governor-spring 30; and by a manual lever 41, which can be set to limit the travel of stops 40 on the segment 39, and can also be used for enforcing a shift in opposition to the governor. The ends of the brake-band 19 are attached to the opposite ends of a two-armed lever 22, which turns on an off-centre fulcrum pivot 23 slidable in a radial slot in a complementary brake-shoe 21, which is restrained against rotation in both directions by a torque-arm 18. In the pressure-less condition shown in Fig. 2, clockwise rotation of the underlying drum 10 causes the unequal arms of the lever 22 to contract the band 19 onto the drum and prevent its rotation, whereas anticlockwise rotation causes release of the drum. Application of oil-pressure to the brake piston 28, which occurs simultaneously with exhaust of the direct-drive clutch-piston 8 for downshift, causes a cam-end of a lever 24, also fulcrummed at 23, to press radially inwards on the brake-shoe 21, forcing out the fulcrum 23 to tighten the brake-band 19 for both directions of rotation. Two or more such gears may be arranged in series to provide additional ratios, and the gear may be driven through a fluid-coupling.
