Abstract

[Class 79 (v).] Means are pro vided whereby, upon the attainment of a predetermined engine speed, the transmission of power to or from the road wheels is automatically interrupted. Thus, if the vehicle is " coasting " with the gears in neutral and a low gear is suddenly engaged while the clutch is engaged, the increase in engine speed brings about disconnection of the driving means before the vehicle can drive the engine at a dangerouslyhigh speed. In the construction shown applied to a pre-selective gear-box 3 driven by an engine 1, the selected gear is engaged by means of a vacuum cylinder 4 having a piston which controls the usual gear-engaging bar. When a valve 6 is operated by the driver the cylinder 4 is connected to the engine induction pipe (not shown) by the pipes 5, 5<a>, 5<b>, and the piston is operated to move the bar so as to release any gear train in use ; the bar is then returned by a spring and causes the selected gear train to be operative. The cylinder 4 is also controlled by means of a valve 9 in a bye-pass 5<c>, this valve being operated by a centrifugal governor 8 driven from the engine shaft 2, so that if the engine speed exceeds a predetermined value the valve 9 opens, the cylinder 4 is connected to the induction pipe, and the gears are put out of action until the engine speed falls and the valve 9 closes. The cylinder 9 may be operated by compressed air, and may act on an ordinary clutch connecting the engine to the road wheels.
