Abstract

384,845. Controlling motor vehicles. FORSTER, A., 61, B÷ndlerstrasse, Kilchberg, Zurich, Switzerland. Feb. 18, 1932, No. 4875. Addition to 382,170, [Group XXIV]. [Class 79 (v).] In variable-speed gearing of the kind described in the parent Specification wherein, to effect speed changes, pairs of constantly meshed wheels such as 3, 4 are moved axially together, by virtue of their having curved or herring-bone teeth, the wheel 3 is connected to the driven shaft 6 through a free-wheel clutch which has positive locking means operating by mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, or electric means, the latter under the control of the accelerator pedal in the case of a motor vehicle. The free-wheel clutch 29 may be of the ball or any other type and is locked by means of a sleeve 28 moved to the left relatively to a boss 7 to engage clutching teeth 32, 33, the balls 29 then resting inoperative in a groove in the boss 7. This is effected by sliding a fork 36 along an operating rail 35 which fixedly carries the gear striker fork 34. In the case of direct manual operation, the striking element first depresses a locking ball 37 to release the fork 36 from the rail. For hydraulic or pneumatic operation the boss of the fork 36 is formed as a hollow piston engaging a cylinder surrounding the rail 35, the piston being spring-urged to the free-wheel position. For electric operation, an iron boss of the fork 36 is surrounded by a solenoid energized, on a switch being closed by the accelerator pedal of the vehicle, so as to lock the free-wheel at low engine speeds.
