Abstract
487,947. Variable-speed gearing. PRYM, H., PRYM, R., and PRYM, A. Dec. 31, 1936, No. 35832. Convention date, Dec. 7. [Class 80 (ii)] Variable-speed friction gearing comprising a conical driving member 1 and a coacting driven member 4, which is carried by swinging arms 8 on the driven shaft 9 and drives the driven shaft through gearing 10, 11, is controlled by both the resistance to motion of the vehicle and a factor of the output of the engine, such as the speed. The resistance torque reacts upon the arms 8 to swing the driven friction member away from the axis of the driving member 1 to reduce the ratio of the drive, axial movement of the driven member 4 to provide for this swinging movement being allowed against fluid pressure acting on a piston 16. This fluid pressure is derived through a. conduit 19 from a pump 20 driven by the engine, so that the piston 16 and therefore the driven friction member 4 is subjected to an axial thrust proportional to engine speed tending to effect an increase in the gear-ratio. This latter effect is combined with the effect of the resistance torque to give a suitable gearratio according to the nature of the road conditions and the operation of the engine. An adjustable throttle valve 23 is placed in the return conduit 22 which can be manually adjusted to vary the fluid pressure acting on the piston 16, and therefore the gear-ratio, apart from the speed of the engine. The fluid pressure in the conduit 19 may also act upon a piston 24 to adjust the engine throttle 29 according to the load and speed variations, the usual pedal 30 also being provided for manual operation of the throttle. A reverse drive is obtained by shifting the driven member 4 so that the driving member 1 engages with the external friction surface 6.
