558,227. Hydraulic power transmission. WOODHAMS, P. G. June 23, 1942, No. 8568. [Class 69 (ii)] A hydraulic power transmission device for motor cars &c. of the kind in which the power shaft drives an annular member 8 filled with oil and the driven shaft is operated by a crank 12 connected by connecting rods 16, 17 to pistons 11 sliding in radial cylinders 2 of a cylinder assembly 1 is characterized in that a ported valve sleeve 9 is automatically adjusted by speedresponsive means to vary the fluid flow between the cylinders and the annulus 8 and so vary the speed ratio. The sleeve 9 is controlled by weights 20 on levers 21 which are controlled centrifugally and by means of links 24 rotate the sleeve 9 so as ultimately to close the inlets 10 thus locking the cylinder assembly 1 and causing equal speeds of the driving and driven shafts. When the inlets 10 are fully open no drive is transmitted, and in other positions the speed ratio varies with the extent of opening of the valve. The movements of the weights 20 are controlled by adjustable springs which resist the motions of the shafts 22. The automatic control of the sleeve 9 may be over-ridden by a handcontrol, and a set of gears may be used to set the driven shaft for forward, neutral, or reverse motion.
