Abstract

545,325. Variable-speed gearing. HOBBS. H, F. Nov. 13, 1940, No. 16420. [Class 80 (ii)] A combined throttle and variable speed gear control comprises a member 1 which during the first part of its movement moves the throttle to its fully open position or substantially' so and decreases the transmission ratios while during the second part of its movement the throttle remains fully open while the transmission ratios are increased, means operated by the transmission output speed being provided to decrease the transmission ratios with increase of speed. As shown, a pair of rotary valves 52, 53 control leakage of pressure fluid from a cylinder 50, the piston 60 of which is connected by a rod 62 to the transmission ratio control member of a variable-speed gear. The cylinder 50 is supplied with pressure fluid from an engine driven pump, or otherwise, and the movement of the piston 60 is such that upon increase of pressure in the cylinder 50 movement of the rod 62 causes a decrease in the transmission ratio. Valve 53 is connected by a crank 54, rod 5, and sleeve 1 to the accelerator pedal 6. Valve 52 is connected by a crank 55 to a centrifugal governor driven by the gear output shaft. The interior of the valve 52 is open to exhaust, and the valve has ports 56, 57. Port 56 is in series with a port 58 in valve 53, leading to the cylinder 50, and port 57 is connected to the cylinder 50 by ducts 71, 73 and annular recess 72 round the valve 53. The shape of the port 58 is such that as the valve 53 moves leakage from the cylinder 50 at first decreases and thereafter increases. Port 56 gradually decreases as the valve 52 is moved so that at high speeds of the gear output shaft it nullifies the effect of the port 58 on the cylinder leakage. Further the port 57 is shaped to increase the leakage as the output speed increases and thus increase the transmission ratio with the 'speed. The cylinder may have a hand controlled valve to permit the use of a higher ratio than that given by the accelerator controlled apparatus. Specification 544,936 is referred to.
