Transmitting power.-A pneumatic rotary-cylinder variable speed gear for transmitting motion from a driving to a driven shaft is provided with a regulating sleeve valve and with an auxiliary reservoir for rotating either shaft when the other shaft is prevented from rotating. The driving shaft 25, Fig. 2, is connected to a casing 1 carrying a number of radial cylinders 3 enclosing pistons 2 mounted on a common crank shaft formed on the driven shaft 19. Passages 3<a> connect the cylinders to a valve casing 7 containing a sleeve valve 8, Figs. 6 and 7, the setting of which can be varied by means of a spirally grooved sleeve 20. In operation, the rotation of the cylinder casing causes air to be drawn into the uppermost cylinder through the port 10<a>, where it is then compressed and delivered into the channel 9. The pressure in the channel 9 increases until the gear functions and transmits the motion to the driven shaft 19. By means of the sleeve 20 the valve can be turned through 90‹ when the gear runs idly or to intermediate positions for intermediate ratios. By means of a valve 17, Fig. 5, and passages 15, 16, a reservoir 18 can be shut off from the gear or be connected through the passage 15 so as to be charged with compressed air or through the passage 16. The reservoir then serves for starting the rotation of the driving shaft 25 when the shaft 19 is prevented from rotating, or drives the shaft 19 when the shaft 25 is not rotating. In a modification, the valve 8 is provided with an auxiliary sliding valve. The valve 17 may be replaced by a pair of valves controlled by a rocking lever.
