Abstract

190,155. Schneider, H. Dec. 6, 1921, [Convention date]. Clutches and speed-varying mechanism; liquidpressure engines.-Hydraulic clutch and variablespeed transmission mechanism comprises a driving-shaft 11 and crank 12, and a rotor 2 geared to the driven shaft, the rotor being provided with cylinders 3 having pistons 4 operated by the crank 12, and with one or more sets of cylinders 13, 23 having pistons operated by a stationary crankpin 10, the eccentricity of which may be varied. A distributing-valve composed of discs 31, 37 carried by the driving-shaft and rotor respectively, passages 30, 55, and passages through the piston 4 allow liquid to be delivered from the cylinders 3. to a passage 44 in the crank-pin 10. When a valve 50 is in the position illustrated, the liquid passes thence to the cylinders 13 through their pistons and is exhausted through a passage 48 into a space 39 from which it returns through a passage 36 into the suction space 40 of the cylinders 3. By moving the valve 50 on to a seat 52 the liquid is given access also to the cylinders 23 and a different speed-ratio is obtained. With the valve 50 in its mid-position, the liquid passes direct from the passage 44 to the space 39. When the crank-pin 10 is in its position of greatest eccentricity, the channel 44 communicates with the space 39 through an annular groove 66 in the disc 37 and no drive is transmitted. As the crank-pin moves towards the centre, the groove 66 is covered and a drive is transmitted at increasing speeds, and when it reaches the centre position a part 59 closes the port through the disc 37, and a direct drive is obtained. The rotors of the primary and secondary pumps may be separate and connected by suitable transmission means, or separate and connected to a common driven shaft, and the crankpin 10 may be non- adjustable, the corresponding rotor being then adjustable.
