Abstract

531,164. Variable-speed gearing. PARAVICINI, T. P. DE. June 23, 1939, No. 32527. Divided out of 519,670. [Class 80 (ii)] Epicyclic or differential gearing for driving internal combustion engine auxiliaries comprises three coaxial members a, d<4>, h. The skew-gear x on the crankshaft drives the two-part shaft a and, through the skew-gears v, y, auxiliaries such as the camshaft, fuelinjection pumps and ignition devices at a fixed speed relative to the engine. The shaft a is built up to form a cage for planet-gears b<3> engaging a sun-gear g<2> and the annulus h. From the gear g<2> is driven an oil-pump p having spring-loaded relief valves. Teeth z on the annulus h drive a gear z<1> actuating the cooling fan, water circulating pump and dynamo. Free-wheel mechanism w between the shafts a, d<4> causes the system to rotate solid at low crankshaft speeds. At higher speeds the shaft d<4> overruns the shaft a, resulting in a lower speed transmission to the auxiliaries driven by the gear z<1>.
