Abstract

204,616. Osborn, A. E. Jan. 2, 1923. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing is combined with an engine crank shaft 12 and arranged upon the opposite side of the engine from the transmitting- means 42. Through the crank-pin passes a spindle 36 connected by gearing 45, 40 to the driven shaft and connected by gearing 35, 30 to a shaft 31 which is adapted to be held fast by a brake 22, or clutched solid, so that the gear 42 may be driven at two speeds in the same or in opposite directions. In the arrangement shown, which is adapted for motor cycles, solid driving is obtained by a spring 34 pressing to the left against clutch member 19 a casing 32 with the shaft 31. An arrangement is described in which an engine having four cylinders is combined with a multiple-speed stepped planet gear.
