Abstract

577,143. Epicyclic gearing. ROTAX, Ltd., and MILLNS, T. W. Dec. 6, 1943, No. 20365. [Class 80 (i)] [Also in Group XXXIII] An electric motor a drives, through a clutch j and an epicyclic reduction gear b, a screw'o that operates a guided nut q for actuating, for example, an aircraft engine radiator shutter. The annulus f of the first sun and planet wheel system is carried bv ball bearings in the housing and has teeth formed on its periphery that are engaged by a pawl 3 guided by a pin 10 and carried by an armature 4 of an electromagnet in the same circuit as the motor. A spring 6 urges the pawl out of engagement with the annulus whilst the electromagnet causes it to engage so that the annulus is free to rotate when the motor is inoperative and the shutter, &c., can be actuated by other means. In a modification, the periphery of the annulus is formed as a worm wheel and a worm on a shaft fitted with a handle is kept in engagement by a spring; the worm may be kept in engagement by an electromagnet and disengaged by a spring.
