Abstract
567,954. Engine turning-gear. C.A.V., Ltd., and NICOLLS. W. E. W. Sept. 6, 1943, No. 14546. [Class 7 (v)] Starting means for an engine comprises an auxiliary internal-combustion engine a connected through a one-way clutch n to the sun pinion c of an epicyclic gear, the annular ring d of the gear being driven by a reversible electric motor b and the planet carrier f being connected through shaft i, one-way clutch o, reduction gear j and over-load clutch k to the starting jaw m. The engine a is first started by energizing the motor b in such direction that the planet carrier f is locked and the sun-wheel is driven to rotate motor a. When this motor runs, the electric motor is reversed and motion is then transmitted to the carrier f and the engine to be started by the joint action of both power units. If only the electric motor is to be used, it is driven in the appropriate direction while the sun pinion is locked bv the clutch n. In a modification, the electric motor is unidirectional and serves the sole purpose of starting engine a, being electromagnetically braked when the engine a has been started.
