Abstract
620,723. Differential gear. M'EWEN, E. G. Oct. 21, 1946, No. 31208. [Class 80 (ii)] To prevent spin, the two output shafts 1, 2 of a bevel differential gear 3 are connected to two elements, viz., the ring-gear 8 and planet-carrier 7, of a secondary epicyclic gear through toothed gears 4, 5 of such ratio that the third element, the sun 9 (or carrier or ring gear). of the said gear remains stationary when the output shafts 1, 2 rotate at equal or other predetermined relative speed so that by locking or braking at 10 the sun 9, differential action is prevented. The brake 10 may be set to. slip at a predetermined load or may be applied centrifugally when the relative speed exceeds a predetermined value, which in the case of a vehicle may be varied automatically with the gear-ratio.
