Abstract

808,543. Change speed and differential gearing. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. Dec. 13, 1956 [Dec. 16, 1955], No. 38127/56. Class 80 (2). The half shafts 37 of a motor vehicle are driven through a bevel gear differential 23 which can be locked by sliding a positive clutch sleeve 41 leftwards of the Figure, the differential planet carrier 21 also carrying the planet gears 24 of a two-speed gear 22 having its internally toothed annulus 25 integral with a driving crown wheel 15. The planet gears 24 mesh a sun-gear 26 integral with a control sleeve 27 having external teeth 28 which, in the position shown, are engaged with corresponding teeth on a fixed ring 29. The sun-gear 26 is accordingly prevented from rotating and the twospeed gear 22 gives a reduced drive. By operating a lever 44 to slide the sleeve 27 leftwards, the teeth of the sun-gear 26 are brought into engagement with internal teeth 46 on the planet gear and differential carrier 21. The changespeed gear 22 is thus locked solid for direct drive. The differential lock-up clutch 41 is controlled by a lever 45. The change-speed gear control lever 44 and the differential locking lever 45 may be interconnected by linkwork (not shown) arranged so that, e.g., the differential is unlocked in one of the two speeds but locked in the other, or so that the differential is initially unlocked but is locked after a speed selected in the change-speed gear has been established.
