Abstract

845,095. Variable-speed gear; differential gear. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. Nov. 5, 1957, No. 16974/59. Divided out of 827,116. Class 80 (2). The half-shafts 15 of a motor car are driven through a crown-wheel 6 having internal teeth 12 meshing planet pinions 9 extending through gaps in their carrier 14, the carrier also acting as the carrier of bevel planet pinions of a differential gear having its sun gears fast with the half-shafts, the planet pinions 9 meshing a sun-gear on a sleeve 16 which, in the position shown, is held stationary so that the planet pinions 9 transmit drive at a reduced ratio to the bevel differential gear, but which can be slidden rightwards to lock-up the planetary gearing for direct drive, the carrier 14 of the planet pinions 9 and of the bevel gear planet pinions being secured against axial movement at one point only so that under load it can deform without causing undue stresses and strains in the adjacent gears and bearings. In the form shown, the planet carrier 14 is prevented from moving axially by two rings 150, 160 securing it to the surrounding housing 7. The planet carrier 14 is otherwise free to move axially. In one modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the axial securing rings 150, 160 are omitted and alternatively a flange on the periphery of the carrier adjacent the planet pinions 9 engages a groove in the surrounding casing 7. In another modification, Fig. 3 (also not shown), the carrier 14 is secured axially by forming the internal teeth 12, the planet pinions 9 and the sun-gear with teeth of herringbone pattern.
