Abstract

1,093,798. Differential gears. ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN A.G. May 4, 1965 [May 9, 19641, No. 18723/65. Heading F2D. A differential gear which distributes power to the front and rear axles of a motor vehicle comprises an input shaft 11 driving through reduction gears 13, 14 a planet carrier 33 of the differential gear, the planets 18 of which mesh a ring gear 17 fast with the rear axle drive shaft 3 and a sun gear 16 which is selectively connected to a front wheel drive shaft 5 for normal differential action, to the planet carrier 33 to lock the differential on to the casing 12 which provides an overdrive to the rear wheels only. An axially slidable clutch sleeve 19 has clutch teeth 22, 23, 27, 28 and in its central position (Fig. 3, not shown) the teeth 27, 28 engage teeth 29, 30 on the sun 16 and shaft 5 respectively. To lock the differential the sleeve 19 is moved right to the position shown in the upper half of Fig. 2 wherein the teeth 23 engage teeth 25 on the gear 14 whilst the teeth 28, 27 remain in engagement with teeth on the sun 16 and shaft 5. Leftward movement of the sleeve 19 engages teeth 22 thereon with teeth 24 on the easing 12 whilst disengaging the teeth 28 from the teeth 30 on the shaft 5. The sun gear 16 is thus held and the shaft 6 driven at an overdrive ratio. The planets 18 may comprise stepped planets 18<SP>1</SP>, 18<SP>11</SP>, lower half of Fig. 2, which mesh the sun 16 and ring gear 17.
