Class 79(2) [Also in Group XXIV] A bogie for a motor road vehicle comprises an enginedriven input shaft 16, Fig. 1, first and second axles 10, 11, reduction gearing 12, 13 for driving each axle, an interaxle differential gear 14 driven by the input shaft, and a clutch 24 which is movable at will to engage or disengage the drive to the second axle. When the drive to the latter is disengaged, the clutch 24 locks a cardan shaft 20 to the axle casing so that an overdrive at half the normal reduction ratio is provided to the first axle only. The differential gear 14 may be of the spur type and be arranged to divide the torgue unequally between the two axles while the clutch 24 may be disposed between the gearing 12 and the shaft 20 to lock the differential gear 14 solid when the drive to the axle 11 is disengaged. In Fig. 9, a bevel drive to the front axle 10 is driven from a sun wheel 17 while a similar drive to the rear axle 11 is driven from a sun - wheel 18 through the clutch 24 and spur gearing, the input shaft 16 being connected to the planet carrier. In the overdrive position, the clutch engages a fixed member 26. In Figs. 6 and 7, the differential gear includes sun wheels 17, 18 of different diameter so that planet pinions 227 may mesh with shorter planet pinions 127 in the space around the smaller sun wheel. The length of the differential gear and hence of the bogie is less than it would be if the sun-wheels were of equal diameter. The clutch 24 is operated by a spring-loaded toggle mechanism 33...37 to connect a shaft 28, which is driven by a cardan shaft from the shaft 19, with either a worm 13 driving the back axle 11 or a fixed clutch member 226.
