Abstract

610,834. Turning-gear. JACK & HEINTZ, Inc. Nov. 22, 1945, No. 31485. Convention date, Dec. 6, 1944. [Class 7 (v)] In an engine starter, Fig. 1, the shaft 3 carrying the sun gear 5 and steep-pitched thread 15 is driven through the ring gear 4 by an electric motor 2, and the sleeve 10, to which the starter jaw 12 is slidably keyed, is attached to the spider carrying the planet gears 6 which also engage a torque-limiting clutch assembly 8 so that as the starter commences to rotate the relative speed between the shaft 3 and sleeve 10 causes the nut 25, which is frictionally engaged with the jaw 12 at its conical end 26, to advance toward the engine jaw member 12<1>, the spring 21 causing the jaw 12 to follow up until it engages the jaw member 121 when the frictional engagement between the nut 25 and jaw 12 is broken and the nut ceases to advance. When the engine starts and the starter is deenergized and comes to rest, the spring 32, which is stronger than spring 21, pulls the nut 25 back along the thread 15, relative rotation between the members 25 and 12 taking place during the camming action of the member 12<1> on the member 12. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the action and drive of the parts is similar to the above-described embodiment, but the jaw advancing spring has its left-hand end bearing on a member 41 carried on the nut 42 so that the springs 40 and 45 do not act in opposition and the working of the mechanism does not therefore rely on their relative strengths. Specifications 550,689 and 564,995 are referred to as describing torque-limiting clutches that may be used.
