[Class 80 (i)] [Also in Group XXX] A power transmitting mechanism comprises an electric motor which drives the screw shaft of a screw-and-nut device through an electromagmetic clutch simultaneously energizable with the motor, and planetary gearing, one part of which associated with the clutch is braked while the motor is inoperative, and another part of which is held against rotation while the motor is operative, but is adapted to be manually operated so as to operate the screw shaft in the event of the motor failing. As shown, the motor 20 drives through an electromagnetic clutch 28, 27, 80, and a planetary gear 38, 39, 44, 45, the screw shaft 50 for actuating the nut 57. The re-action gear 44 of the planetary gear is held stationary by a worm 70 engaging external teeth 43 on the gear 44 during normal operation. When the motor is not operative the clutch member 80 is disengaged and held by spring engagement with a brake ring 90 and the re-action gear 44 can be rotated by manual operation of the worm 70 to actuate the screw shaft 50.
