Abstract

612,462. Lifting-jacks. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. May 24, 1946, No. 15755. Convention date, May 26, 1945. [Class 78 (iii)] In screw jacks driven by an electric motor through gearing, a locking member is provided which normally locks one of the transmission gears to prevent rotation of the screw, but is engageable with another of the transmission members to permit operation of the jack when the motor is energized. The speed reduction gearing between the motor 20, Fig. 1, and the screw shaft 70 comprises two ring gears 50 and 51, Figs. 1 and 3, and a cooperating hypocyclic gear 40, the latter being driven by the motor. One ring gear 51, attached to the screw shaft 70 by means of a torsion rod 61, is normally engaged and locked by the arm 128 of a pawl 115 which renders the gearing inoperative, but when the motor is energized an electromagnetic shifter rocks the pawl 115 so that the arm 128 disengages the ring 51, and the arm 127 engages the gear member 50 which is then locked against rotation and becomes a reaction member to effect drive. The electromagnetic shifter-comprises a solenoid 133, Figs. 1 and 2, which operates links 131 and 130 which rotate the rod 125 and pawl 115. The electrical circuit being such that the solenoid is energized at the same instant as the motor is connected in circuit. The non-rotatable nut 90, Fig. 4, has abutment lugs 84a and 85a at each end, each being adapted to engage one of the corresponding lugs 84 or 85, Figs. 1 and 4, on the screw shaft 70, so preventing its rotation when the nut is in either of its extreme positions, and as the gearing and screw are resiliently connected by the torsion rod 61, the jack is not harmed by the sudden engagement of co-operating lugs. Limit switches 111 and 110, Figs. 1 and 4, are controlled by the nut for rendering the motor and magnetic shifter inactive immediately before the nut moves one of its abutment lugs into engagement with a co-operating lug on the screw shaft.
