Abstract

518,366. Motor driving-arrangements. VIDAL C. H., and S. E. M. DEVELOPMENTS, Ltd. Aug. 17, 1938, No. 24278. [Class 35] Epicyclic gear, by which an electric motor is coupled to its load, such as the driving-wheels of a vehicle, is controlled by the motor current, so that when the current reaches a certain limit the transmission ratio is increased. The figure shows a pinion 9 on the motor-shaft 5 meshing with planet-wheels 11 on a carrier 10 secured to the driven shaft 6. The planet wheels 11 also mesh with an internal gear 14 on a member 13. Splined to the member 13, so as to rotate with it, is a member 15. Normally the member 15 under the action of a spring 20 engages a friction face on a member 17 secured to the shaft 6, so that the whole gear rotates as one piece. When the motor-current exceeds a certain limit a magnet 21 disengages the member 15 from the member 17 and causes it to engage the fixed face of the magnet, when the gear operates as a reduction gear. The magnet 21 may be in series with the motor-armature, but is preferably energized through a relay; two circuits for this purpose are'described.
