Abstract

677,099. Variable-speed gearing. DAIMLERBENZ AKT.-GES. Feb. 23, 1950 [Feb. 23, 1949], No. 4723/50. Class 80 (ii). Auxiliary epicyclic change-speed gearing for motor vehicles, comprising a planet carrier 5 secured to a shaft 1 connected to the output from the main gear box, an annulus 9 on the final driven shaft 3 and a reaction sun 8, has a one-way clutch 16 between the shafts 1, 3 so as to effect direct drive when the shaft 1 is driving forwardly and a one-way detent 17 between the sun 8 and the stationary housing 14 so as to effect an overdrive when the shaft 3 is driving forwardly, an armature disc 11 on the sun 8 cooperating with electromagnets 12, 13 in the housing 14 and annulus 9 respectively so that, when magnet 13 is energised, direct drive is effected when either shaft 1 or 3 is driving forwardly, while, when magnet 12 is energised, an overdrive is effected when either shaft 1 or 3 is driven forwardly. In order to permit rearward travel of the vehicle, the detent 17 must be rendered inoperative by withdrawing a pawl 19. Reverse drive can then be transmitted from shaft 1 to shaft 3 (direct drive) when magnet 13 is energised, while reverse drive can be transmitted from shaft 3 to shaft 1 (direct drive) when magnet 13 is energised or both magnets are de-energised. The pawl 19 may be withdrawn automatically upon engagement of reverse gear in the main gear box, and the magnet 13 may be energised automatically upon engagement of middle speed or reverse.
