Abstract

285,236. Mason, A. E. Jan. 27, 1927. Variable-speed and reversing gearing comprises an epicyclic train 1, 5, 4, Fig. 1, controlled by a worm 10 driven from a variable-speed electric motor, which is adapted to be used for starting a main engine coupled to a driving-shaft 2, The electric motor is controlled by suitable manual means or by a governor worked from the road-wheels of a vehicle. A variably-driven shaft 12 may be connected through a reversing train 14, 21, 15 to a shaft 13 which is reversed by actuating a double-ended splined clutch 16. The main engine is started from the control motor when the load shaft 12 is held against rotation. This may be done by putting the clutch 16 on neutral and advancing a brake block 34, Fig. 3, into gripping engagement with it by operating a screw 35. The clutch 16 may be operated by a crank 24 having three flats 29 engaged by a spring plunger 28, which holds the clutch in gear and neutral positions. Instead of the bevel main train 1, 5, 4, Fig. 1, three-element spur trains are described, the controlled element in one being the planet-carrier, and in the other, the internally-toothed ring.
