Abstract

136,383. Boerner, A. Feb. 18, 1919. Variable - speed epicyclic gearing.- In a variable-speed and reversing gearing applicable to motor cars and cycles, aeroplanes, ship propulsion, machine tools, &c., the driving and driven shafts are in line with an intermediate shaft, and two epicyclic gears are arranged in series for transmitting the motions. The driving and driven shafts 1, 5 each carry an internally toothed wheel 4, 8 gearing, through planet-pinions carried in a frame, with a wheel 11, 12 on the intermediate shaft 9. One member 14 of the frame, carrying the planetpinions 15, 16 gearing with the wheels 4, 11, has eccentrics 17, 18 secured thereto. These eccentrics operate the plungers of pumps, the cylinders of which are in communication by means of bypasses 25 controlled by throttle valves 27 operated by a rod 38. By operating the valves, the frame 14 can be held stationary, or an adjustable amount of slip allowed, to drive the shaft 9 at a variable speed. In a modification, the frame member 14 is provided with projections, and may be moved along the shaft 9 to engage with projections on the pinions 15, 16 so as to obtain a solid drive. The member 30 of the frame carrying the planet-pinions 32. 33 engaging the wheels 8, 12 is provided with projections, and is slidable along the shaft 9 so that it can be brought into engagement either with projections 45, 46 and locked to the casing 37, or with projections on the planet pinions so as to obtain a solid drive. By controlling the two gears, a. variable speed in either direction can be imparted to the shaft 5.
