Abstract

21,723. Clifford, I. Oct. 25. Motor road vehicles.-A variable-speed friction gearing, particularly applicable to motor road vehicles, comprises a driven roller f slidably mounted on the transverse shaft g and pressed into engagement with the uniformly driven cone b by a cylindrical roller h. The shaft g may conveniently carry sprocket-wheels g<1> which drive the vehicle wheels. The cone b is arranged so that its lines of engagement with the friction wheel f is parallel to the shaft upon which the latter is mounted, the cone being conveniently driven as shown by the engine shaft d. The shafts g, i are rendered capable of a slight transverse movement by being slidably mounted in elongated bearings as shown in Fig. 2. The roller h carried by the shaft i extends along the range of travel of the disk f, and may be pressed against the latter to bring it into engagement with the cone by means of cams k fixedly mounted on the shaft j, which may be rocked and locked by operation of the quadrant lever t, with which it is connected by the links v, u. To slide the disk f along the cone b when either in or out of driving engagement to vary the speed ratio, the disk has a grooved boss carrying a strap or collar m, which is engaged and operated by a slotted bellcrank lever o pivoted at p and connected by the link r with the hand-lever and quadrant s. Other operating means may be employed. The axes of the cone, roller, &c. may be arranged in a vertical or other plane, or the roller h may be adapted to be oscillated or swung towards the friction wheel f. In a modification, the axis of the sliding pinion may be arranged in line with the motor shaft instead of upon a transverse shaft, and a reverse may be obtained from the lowest speed by means of bevel pinions on the friction wheel and the narrow end of the cone, and an intermediate double bevelwheel, spring-mounted so that in forward driving it is out of mesh.
