Abstract

18,894. Henriod, C. E. Sept. 28, 1905, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Variable-speed gearing. -Relates to the construction of change-speed toothed gearing, and to its disposition on a motorcar. The first motion shaft 5 carries a pinion 18 and forms a bearing for the squared shaft 16, on which are mounted a sliding wheel 23, operated by a fork 25 and a fixed wheel 22 connected to a bevel-pinion driving the differential gear on the rear axle. A squared countershaft 17 carries a sliding pinion 19 operated in conjunction with the wheel 23 by means of a pivoted lever 27, a second fixed pinion 24, and a third sliding pinion 20 adapted for reversing. In the position shown, the gear is arranged for low speed and the intermediate speed is cbtained by sliding the wheels 23, 19 to the right. The high speed is obtained by moving the same wheels to the left so that the clutch teeth on the wheels 18, 23 engage, giving a direct drive, For reversing, the pinion 20 is moved to the right, and after engaging one of the reversing- wheels 21, it moves both these wheels to the right until one of them engages the spur-wheel 22.
